San Francisco star running back Christian McCaffrey made NFL history during the 49ers’ 22-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday in Minneapolis.

McCaffrey scored a touchdown from scrimmage for an NFL-record 16th straight game (including the postseason), finding the end zone on a 3-yard run with 1:01 left in the first half. He added a 35-yard TD reception in the third quarter, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent San Francisco from falling to 5-2.

Baltimore Colts running back Lenny Moore (1963-64), Buffalo Bills running back O.J. Simpson (1974-75) and Washington running back John Riggins (1982-83) previously shared the record with McCaffrey, scoring from scrimmage in 15 consecutive games.

However, Moore still has a place in the record book, as he went 17 straight games with a touchdown of any kind, setting the record across the 1963-64 seasons. McCaffrey will have a chance to match that streak when the 49ers play the Cincinnati Bengals in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday.

McCaffrey rushed 15 times for 45 yards on Monday night, and he also came down with three catches for 51 yards.

In seven games this season, the 27-year-old Stanford product leads the NFL with 598 rushing yards. He also has 26 receptions for 228 yards and a total of 11 TDs (eight rushing, three receiving).
