NFL News: 49ers GM: Ready to pay, all-in on QB Brock Purdy

Any notion the San Francisco 49ers were undecided about their future at quarterback was dispelled by general manager John Lynch on Wednesday.

Lynch made it clear the 49ers are fully committed to keeping Brock Purdy, who is eligible for a contract extension immediately. Purdy had 3,864 passing yards and 20 touchdowns in 2024 but San Francisco missed the playoffs after winning the NFC and finishing as runner-up to the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

“I think what we know about Brock is, he’s our guy,” Lynch said Wednesday seated to the right of head coach Kyle Shanahan at the team facility in Santa Clara, Calif. “We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time. He’s done so much for our organization. He’s won big games. And you know, had a little tougher task as we all did this year with some of the things that happened throughout the course of the year. We just never could string games where we were all together. Through that he continued to lead, he continued to play at a high level, so we have every interest in him being around.

“The way this goes is these press conferences are necessary but kind of silly. Kyle’s coaching, we spend time together all the time, and there’s big issues that affect the team, but he’s just getting off coaching. He’s had his door shut for two days doing exit interviews with players. We’ll have some time here in the coming week to sit together and put our whole plan together. That’s obviously a priority, that position, and we’ll give it that attention.”

The top of the market for starting quarterbacks in the NFL is around $60 million annually, a figure reached by Dak Prescott in a four-year agreement last year.

The 49ers have had tense negotiations with key players in the offseason recently, including wide receivers Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and left tackle Trent Williams. Purdy said on Monday that his priority is getting a deal done quickly.

“I want to be able to handle business the right way and do it in a respectable manner and get back to my team as fast as I can to get going,” Purdy said.

Purdy ranked 53rd in annual average salary among quarterbacks in 2024 at $934,252 – only two rostered quarterbacks made less. The Chicago Bears paid undrafted backup Tyson Bagent $906,667 and the Panthers paid Jack Plummer $877,500. The two players just ahead of Purdy on the annual scale were Bengals backup Jake Browning and Jaren Hall of the Seahawks at $972,500.

Purdy, 25, is owed $1.19 million for 2025 on the deal he signed as a seventh-round draft choice in 2022.
