The New York Giants activated wide receiver Sterling Shepard from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday.

Head coach Brian Daboll said Shepard will return to practice for the first time since tearing his left Achilles tendon in December.

“It will be good to have him out there,” Daboll said.

While the Giants welcomed the return of Shepard, they saw fellow wide receiver Collin Johnson sustain a torn Achilles on Wednesday. Johnson will be placed on injured reserve and miss the upcoming season, the Giants said.

Shepard was injured during a Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and finished last season with 36 catches for 366 yards and one touchdown in seven games.

Shepard, 29, has recorded 349 receptions for 3,884 yards and 21 touchdowns in 72 games since being selected in the second round of the NFL draft in 2016.

Johnson, 24, had seven receptions for 82 yards in the Giants’ preseason opener against the New England Patriots on Aug. 11.

He has 29 catches for 377 yards and two touchdowns in 26 career games with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Giants. He was selected by Jacksonville in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
