In an act of violence, a father from New York, identified as Patrick D. Proefriedt, has been charged with murder after allegedly firing a crossbow at his wife. The horrifying and senseless act resulted in the tragic death of their three-week-old infant daughter. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday morning, in the town of Colesville.
According to Broome County authorities, 26-year-old Proefriedt engaged in a heated argument with his wife when he aimed the crossbow at her. Tragically, the bolt struck their infant daughter, Eleanor M. Carey, in the upper torso, before hitting the mother in the chest. Despite emergency responders’ attempts to save the baby, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
After removing the bolt, Proefriedt allegedly tried to prevent his wife from contacting emergency services before fleeing the scene in a red pickup truck. An extensive search operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, patrol units, and drones. The suspect was eventually captured less than a mile from the home.

Authorities have revealed that Proefriedt had a history of domestic incidents with the victim and was subject to an active Stay Away Order of Protection. His arrest marks charges of murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree, and criminal contempt in the first degree.
Sheriff of Broome County, Fred Akshar, expressed his condolences, calling the incident “one of the most heartbreaking and senseless crimes committed in this community in recent memory.” He commended law enforcement for their swift response, ensuring that Proefriedt would face justice.
As the investigation into this incident continues, Proefriedt is currently in custody awaiting his arraignment. The community mourns the loss of Eleanor M. Carey, an innocent victim of a devastating act of violence.
