US researchers may have discovered why hair becomes grey with age. They have pointed to pigment-producing cells that lose the capacity to mature. The mechanism was investigated by the New York University (NYU) team using mice, whose fur color is determined by the same cells. Researchers claim that the study could serve as a foundation for reversing the greying process. The main problem is imprisoned stem cells; as a result, new advice for naturally preventing grey hairs from showing up in your mane may be forthcoming. The study, which was released this week in the journal Nature, claims that melanocytes, also known as McSCs, are the origin of it all.
Melanocytes were not new to the study team from NYU Grossman School of Medicine. They are the primary process through which the pigment melanin, which gives color to the skin and eyes, is produced. Hair color is largely determined by melanin. McSCs linger in the hair follicles, where they are informed when to mature into cells by a protein signal. The hair color results from the release of pigment by mature cells.

The researchers discovered over the course of this investigation that McSCs actually travel between small compartments in the hair follicle. The MsSC may receive a slightly different protein signal from each compartment, allowing it to bounce between several levels of maturity. This is very different from how other stem cell’s function, which is to mature until they are dead.
The more McSCs that become lodged in the hair follicle bulge, a specific compartment where the hair develops and sheds in cycles, the more damage occurs. The follicular bulge is neither signaling those McSCs to develop nor returning them to a compartment that would. The hair can continue to grow because the cells are blocked, but it lacks color. Consequently, the person starts to age.

However, McSCs do not determine when the grey begins to show. According to Dr. Jenna Lester, a dermatologist, and lecturer at the University of California, San Francisco, there are several variables besides aging that are at play, such as hormones, stress, certain medical conditions, and genetics.
According to National Institutes of Health studies, 74% of persons between the ages of 45 and 65 have at least a few silver strands. Researchers state that relocating the McSCs to their correct place could stop greying. The researchers also claim that research of this kind is also moving them closer to finding a cure for cancer.
