New Study Finds Increased Nano plastics From Bottled Water

Researchers found over 240,000 identifiable plastic particles in every liter of bottled water, according to a study published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. Utilizing calibrated lasers to cause particular molecules to resonate, they could probe samples and discover tiny fragments of plastic known as nanoplastics.

These days, plastics are everywhere in our daily lives. Recently, there have been worries about potential health effects related to microplastics (1 µm to 5 mm in length) and potentially even nanoplastics (<1 ?m). It is thought that nanoplastics are more harmful than microplastics because of how much easier it is for them to penetrate the human body due to their smaller size.

Researchers at Columbia University and Rutgers University tested and studied three water brands, but brand names were not disclosed.

In response to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences  (PNUS Study), the International Bottled Water Association said that there  “currently is both a lack of standardized (measuring) methods and no scientific consensus on the potential health impacts of nano- and microplastic particles. Therefore, media reports about these particles in drinking water do nothing more than unnecessarily scare consumers.”

The study concluded that “nanoplastics are believed to be more toxic since their smaller size renders them much more amenable, compared to microplastics, to enter the human body.”

Nanoplastics, microscopic plastic particles measuring less than 100 nanometers, pose a grave threat to human health. Due to their tiny size, they can easily penetrate cells and tissues, potentially causing inflammation and triggering adverse immune responses. These particles may also carry harmful chemicals, posing long-term health risks. As nanoplastic pollution rises, understanding and addressing its implications for human well-being becomes increasingly crucial.
