Many women reported experiencing heavier-than-normal menstrual bleeding soon after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine during the global rollout of the vaccine. Kristine Blix, the study’s author from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, wanted to take a comprehensive look at the trend, especially among women who don’t often have periods, such as those who use contraceptives or have undergone menopause. Over 21,000 replies from postmenopausal, perimenopausal, and non-menstruating premenopausal women were analyzed by the team, some of whom were on long-term hormonal contraceptives.
The outcomes were unexpected, according to Blix. 924 premenopausal women, 1,008 perimenopausal women, and 252 postmenopausal women all reported having unexpected vaginal bleeding, the researchers discovered.
About half of each group claimed that the bleeding started four weeks after receiving either the first or second dosage of the vaccination, or both. In the month following immunization, premenopausal and perimenopausal women were three to five times more likely than non-premenopausal women to report unexpected bleeding. For postmenopausal women, the risk multiplied by two to three.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health followed several cohorts throughout the pandemic and early performed a systematic data collection of self-reported unexpected vaginal bleeding in non-menstruating women. Among 7725 postmenopausal women, 7148 perimenopausal women, and 7052 premenopausal women, 3.3, 14.1, and 13.1% experienced unexpected vaginal bleeding during a period of 8 to 9 months, respectively. In postmenopausal women, the risk of unexpected vaginal bleeding (i.e., postmenopausal bleeding) in the 4 weeks after COVID-19 vaccination was increased two- to threefold, compared to a pre-vaccination period.” Source: Science.org
