New study reveals Connecticut has the highest percentage of drivers causing fatal crashes due to road rage.

  • Colorado has the highest percentage, with 8.19% of its drivers causing crashes due to road rage in America
  • Connecticut, with 7.56%, is the second state in the US causing the most crashes due to road rage
  • California ranks as the second safest state in the US for road raged drivers

A new study has revealed the states where road rage is causing the most problems in the US, with Colorado taking the top spot.

The study was conducted by criminal defence law firm Simmrin Law Group, who examined the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s motor vehicle crash data focusing on drivers involved in fatal crashes due to road rage between 2017 and 2021.

The state in which road rage is causing the most problems is Colorado, where 8.19% of drivers were involved in fatal crashes where road rage was noted as a contributing factor. Between the years of 2017 and 2021, there were a total of 4,589 drivers in fatal crashes, and 376 of those drivers were experiencing road rage. The year with the highest number of drivers in fatal crashes involving road rage was 2021, with 126 in total; this is over double the number in 2017, when there were 51.

Connecticut is the second state where road rage is causing the most problems in the US. In 2020, there were 37 drivers in fatal crashes involving road rage in the state. That’s 16 more crashes than in 2018, when there were 21. The percentage of drivers who were involved in fatal crashes caused by road rage is 7.56%.

The third most road-raged state is Indiana. Indiana has seen the highest total number of drivers crashes in the US involving road rage between 2017 and 2021 at 486. In total, there have been 6,375 drivers involved in fatal crashes, but 7.34% of the drivers involved in the fatal crashes were due to road rage.

Alabama is the fourth state with the highest number of drivers in fatal crashes involving road rage. There have been 366 drivers involved in fatal crashes due to road rage between 2017 and 2021, and 5.61% of these fatal crashes were due to drivers experiencing road rage.

The fifth state where road rage is causing the most problems is Wisconsin, where 4.93% of drivers who are involved in fatal crashes are linked to road rage. The year which saw the most fatal crashes involving road rage in this state was 2020, when there were 54 drivers in fatal crashes due to aggressive driving.

Hawaii and the District of Colombia rank sixth and seventh, respectively. In Hawaii, between 2017 and 2021, there were 33 drivers n fatal crashes involving road rage, and in the District of Columbia, there were 10. In Hawaii, the percentage of drivers involved in fatal crashes caused by aggressive driving is 4.80% compared to the District of Columbia, which is 4.37%.

South Carolina is the eighth state which has the highest percentage of aggressive drivers involved in fatal crashes, at 3.70% of the total drivers in fatal crashes in the state. Between 2017 and 2021, there were ten drivers in fatal crashes due to aggressive driving.

The ninth most road-raged state is Arkansas, with 2.18% of the drivers involved in fatal crashes experiencing road rage. There have been 87 road rage-related drivers in fatal crashes between 2017 and 2021, with most crashes taking place in 2021, when there were 29.

West Virginia is the tenth state where road rage is causing the most problems, with a total of 40 drivers in fatal crashes due to aggressive driving. In both 2017 and 2020, there were ten drivers in fatal crashes due to road rage, and the percentage of drivers causing fatal crashes due to aggressive driving in this state is 2.09%.

A spokesperson from Simmrin Law Group commented:   Aggressive driving causes a catastrophic amount of fatal accidents in America, and with more and more catalysts such as technology, road works and environmental factors affecting a drivers awareness, it is essential that as soon as you get behind the wheel, you remain calm and alert.

With Americans facing higher levels of stress and anxiety due to factors such as the increase in the cost of living and dependence on timely arrivals for appointments, work and childcare, it can all lead to drivers getting into their cars and letting their anger take over instead of calmly and consciously navigating behind the wheel.

Methodology: The study was conducted by analyzing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Motor Vehicle Crash Data Querying and Reporting, looking at the number of fatal crashes in each US state between 2017 and 2021.

This study particularly focused on the number of fatal crashes which occurred due to aggressive drivers with road rage. By knowing the total number of drivers involved fatal crashes in each state and the total number of drivers in fatal crashes in each state that were caused by road rage, we could reveal the percentage of drivers in fatal crashes involving road rage.?
