Federal investigators said on Thursday that the US Army veteran who drove a three-ton pickup through a crowd in New Orleans acted alone. The man, who has been identified as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, died in a gunfight with the police. He served eight years in the military and was deployed in Afghanistan.
Christopher Raia, who is in the counter-terrorism division of the FBI, told reporters, “We’re confident, at this point, that there are no accomplices.”
Raia also said, “He was 100 percent inspired by ISIS.”
Shamsud-Din Jabbar killed at least 14 people and was shot by the police. He also injured about 30 when he randomly drove into revelers in Bourbon Street. The pickup he drove was flying a black ISIS flag.
Crude bombs had also been placed in the neighborhood. Two explosive devices placed in blue ice coolers in the French Quarter were dismantled, while others were said to be nonfunctional. They had been placed by the driver about two hours before the attack in Bourbon Street.
Federal authorities have interviewed hundreds of people and checked the attacker’s calls, social media accounts, and electronic devices. US veteran Jabbar made a video saying that he had joined ISIS.
Preliminary examinations show that he had no link to the Tesla truck that exploded in front of a hotel in Las Vegas that Donald Trump owns. The truck driver in that incident had shot himself before he blew up the truck.
New Orleans is slowly moving towards normalcy after the horrific incident of the pickup mowing down its residents while they were reveling during the New Year in the city. A candlelight memorial has been set up on Bourbon Street, including a large cross and flowers.
