On Monday, the legislature in Florida introduced a new bill that is expected to give its governor Ron DeSantis control over the board that specially governs a district called Reedy Creek Improvement District. It is also referred to as the Disney government as the US theme parks and entertainment company controlled the decisions in the district through the appointment of board members. The decision is a result of the conflict between the governor and elected representatives in Florida with Disney due to its opposition to the “Don’t Say Gay” law.
When Florida had passed the bill that is commonly referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, Disney said that it would pause political donations. It also offered support to organizations who worked to oppose the law.

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis and other Republicans criticized the entertainment giant, called it “woke” and more. Last April, the GOP dominated state approved legislation that would remove the Reedy Creek government set up by Disney, by June 2023.
Although the new proposal would mostly leave the district and its abilities intact, the name would be changed to Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The governor will appoint a five-member oversight board. Earlier, members were appointed by entities that were controlled by the entertainment giant.

The special district covers almost forty square miles and is in two different counties: Orange and Osceola. It consists of Disney World, Epcot and other attractions. It has been under the control of Disney from 1967, when it became a new district.
The new bill might face a legal challenge from Disney, as the entertainment giant would lose control over many functions in its theme parks in Orlando. As of now, the company said that they were monitoring the progress of the complex draft legislation.
The Republican dominated state of Florida also proposed to pass other bills to advance their governor’s national agenda and appeal to the GOP’s conservative base. Bills that tighten immigration as well as what is perceived as election fraud have also been proposed.
