A new study by addiction specialists, The Diamond Rehab, has analyzed search volume data for multiple phrases, terms, and queries related to work-related burnout over the last 12 months to determine which states suffer from burnout the most.
California secures fifth place, with 609 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases. Like the previous entries, ‘Depersonalization” is the most searched burnout-related keyword. However, due to the sheer size of California’s population, the state has the highest average monthly searches – a massive 141,300.
Oregon takes the second spot on the list, with a monthly search volume of 647 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases. Like Massachusetts, “Depersonalization” was the most frequently searched term related to burnout, with 16,000 average monthly searches.
in first place on the list of the most burnt-out states is Massachusetts, with a monthly search volume of 690 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases. “Depersonalization” was by far the most searched term in Massachusetts, with 27,800 monthly searches on average.
New York ranks close behind in third on the list, averaging a monthly search volume of 645 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases. “Depersonalization” was the most searched burnout-related term throughout the state, with 74,300 average monthly searches, followed by “burnout symptoms” and “stress management” with 22,500 and 13,980 monthly searches, respectively.
Fourth place goes to Washington, averaging a monthly search volume of 641 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases. Like the previous entries on the list, “Depersonalization” once again takes first place as the most searched burnout-related term, averaging 28,800 monthly searches.
The remainder of the top ten features Maryland in at sixth place, with a monthly search volume of 591 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases. Seventh place goes to Colorado, with a monthly search volume of 587 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases.
Virginia ranks in eighth place with a monthly search volume of 577 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases. Rhode Island takes the ninth spot with a monthly search volume of 574 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases.
Rounding out the list in tenth place is Vermont, with a monthly search volume of 566 per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases.
Interestingly, “Depersonalization” was universally the most searched burnout-related term across all states, followed – again universally – by “Burnout symptoms.”
Mississippi proved to be the least burnt-out state, taking the last spot on the list with only 284 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents for work burnout-related terms and phrases.

A spokesperson for The Diamond Rehab commented on the findings, saying:
“This study underscores the importance of addressing burnout as a public health concern. Prioritizing self-care is extremely important. Allocating time in your schedule for activities that bring you relaxation is integral to combatting burnout. Whether it’s a hobby, exercise, or simply unwinding with a good book, taking time for yourself is crucial. Sometimes, simply sharing your feelings and concerns can provide valuable relief and guidance in overcoming burnout”
“The findings offer valuable insights into the challenges individuals across various regions may face while highlighting the importance of recognizing and addressing burnout. It’s encouraging to see this data contributing to a broader conversation about mental health and work-life balance.”
