After wreaking significant damage in Cuba, Ian, a destructive Category 4 hurricane that is now just shy of Category 5, is predicted to affect a large region of the state with life-threatening storm surge, potentially catastrophic flooding, and devastating winds.

According to poweroutage.us, approximately 270,000 households and businesses throughout the state are without electricity as Hurricane Ian approaches. The National Weather Service reports that Hurricane Ian’s eyewall, which has deadly winds close to Category 5 strength, has started to make landfall as the system is projected to make landfall tonight around Orlando.

The NHC said that at 11 a.m., the center of Ian was about 165 miles south-southwest of Orlando, 50 miles south-southwest of Punta Gorda, and 45 miles west-northwest of Naples. It was heading northeast at 9 mph.
