NCAAF News: Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire lands new deal through 2028

Texas Tech announced a new six-year, $26.6 million contract for football coach Joey McGuire on Wednesday.

The deal runs through the 2028 campaign, when his annual salary will peak at $4.6 million.

McGuire, 51, can also earn additional undisclosed performance bonuses.

The Red Raiders (7-5) conclude their first season under McGuire on Wednesday night against Ole Miss (8-4) in the Texas Bowl in Houston.

A bowl victory would give Texas Tech eight wins for the first time since the 2013 season.

The Red Raiders beat both Texas and Oklahoma this season for the first time in program history and posted their best Big 12 record (5-4) since 2009 under the late Mike Leach.

“I firmly believe our best days are still ahead with Coach McGuire at the helm of our football program,” athletic director Kirby Hocutt said. “It was evident throughout this football season that he and his staff are building a culture that will benefit this program for years to come. Coach McGuire will be the first to tell you that his goal is not to just play in a bowl game but to win championships, and I believe we are on that path under his direction.”

McGuire was hired on Nov. 8, 2021, after five seasons at Baylor, including three seasons as the associate head coach (2019-21).

“We firmly believe the success our team has experienced this season is the standard for what is yet to come,” McGuire said. “Our entire family can’t thank Red Raider Nation enough for their passionate support that is unmatched in college football.”
