Oklahoma State defensive coordinator and former head coach Derek Mason is taking a “sabbatical from coaching” and won’t return to the Cowboys in 2023.
Mason, 53, made the announcement Thursday on social media.
“I look forward to spending time with my family to rest and reflect on opportunities within the game I love,” Mason posted, in part, on Twitter.

Mason just completed his first season in Stillwater, Okla. He spent 2021 as the DC for Auburn.
“Oklahoma State football and I appreciate what Derek Mason and his family have brought to our team/culture,” OSU head coach Mike Gundy said in a statement. “The positive effect he’s had on our players, staff and program has been awesome. I know it was a tough decision, but life is bigger than football. We wish him and his family nothing but the very best and they are always welcome back in Stillwater.”
Mason went 27-55 in seven seasons as the head coach of Vanderbilt from 2014-20.
