Emmett Johnson ran for two touchdowns, Dylan Raiola threw for two scores and Nebraska posted its second straight blowout, rolling past Houston Christian 59-7 on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
The Cornhuskers (3-0) topped the 50-point mark for a second straight game for the first time since 2007, outgaining Houston Christian in yards 554-160. They also forced two turnovers, with Williams Nwaneri returning a second-quarter fumble 29 yards for a TD.
Donning all-red uniforms for the first time since 1986, Nebraska scored on its first five possessions while Houston Christian (1-2) did not pick up a first down until almost midway through the second quarter. The Cornhuskers scored on their first six trips to the red zone and averaged 8.3 yards per play.
Raiola was 15 of 21 for 222 yards and his two TDs in only two quarters of action as the Cornhuskers led 38-0 at halftime. Backup TJ Lateef came in and was 5 of 5 for 126 yards with a 62-yard TD pass to fellow freshman Cortez Mills Jr. Lateef added a rushing TD.
Johnson scored on runs of 2 and 4 yards and finished with 78 yards while Kwinten Ives ran for 85 yards and a TD.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter on a 45-yard run by Xai’Shaun Edwards. That ended a streak of more than 104 minutes without allowing a score by Nebraska, which was seeking back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1997 after crushing Akron 68-0 last Saturday.
Edwards ran for 82 yards on 13 carries while Jake Weir threw for 67 yards on 11-of-18 passing. Nebraska did not allow a reception longer than 10 yards.
Houston Christian returns home to host Northern Colorado on Sept. 20, while Nebraska begins Big Ten play on Sept. 20 at home against No. 23 Michigan seeking its first 4-0 start since 2016.
