NCAAF News: Kent State removes interim tag from coach Mark Carney

Kent State nixed the interim label and made Mark Carney the 24th head coach in the history of the program on Thursday.

Carney assumed the interim head coaching position in April after taking over for Kenni Burns, who lost all 12 games last season and posted a 1-23 record during his two years at the helm.

Under Carney, Kent State is 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Mid-American Conference play this season.

The Golden Flashes posted a 21-17 victory over FCS Merrimack in their season opener, marking their first win since a 38-10 triumph over Central Connecticut State on Sept. 16, 2023.

Kent State also secured its first conference victory since Nov. 26, 2022 with a 42-6 drubbing of UMass on Oct. 11.

“Since taking over as interim head coach, Mark has instilled belief, togetherness, and a winning culture into our football program,” Kent State vice president and athletic director Randale L. Richmond said in a statement.

“The way he’s positively impacted this team, this department, this campus, and this community, he’s earned the right to lead this program.”

Carney joined Kent State in January 2023 as a tight ends coach before being elevated to offensive coordinator ahead of the 2024 season.

“I am humbled and honored to serve this university and our football program,” Carney said. “The opportunity to lead a college football program in Northeast Ohio, a place that’s home for me, is extremely special.

“… I am so damn proud of our team. What our players and staff have done over the last seven months inspires me daily. I am grateful to serve the young men in our locker room and look forward to continuing to build on Kent State football’s outstanding history and tradition.”
