Grant Wells threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns as Virginia Tech cruised to a 27-7 win over visiting Wofford on Saturday at Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech (2-1) didn’t start to gain control until scoring two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the first half. The Hokies held a 20-0 lead at intermission.

Wofford (0-3), which suffered shutout losses to Chattanooga and Elon, managed just 199 yards of total offense. More than half of that total came in the fourth quarter.

Wells threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jadan Blue with 25 seconds left in the first half. That capped a 10-play, 64-yard march, while Virginia Tech’s first touchdown drive took 14 plays to go 82 yards before Jalen Holston scored from 1 yard out.

Wells’ 27-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Duke gave the Hokies a 27-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. That scoring drive consisted of eight plays covering 80 yards.

Holston gained 66 yards on 16 carries for the Hokies, who have won two consecutive home games after dropping a 20-17 decision on the road in their opener at Old Dominion.

Wofford scored for the first time this season with 9:34 remaining in the fourth quarter on Nathan Walker’s 3-yard run.

The Terriers, who posted just 38 rushing yards, finished with 12 first downs. Wofford punted eight times.

Quarterback Jimmy Weirick completed 14 of 20 passes for 161 yards.

Virginia Tech scored first on William Ross’ 46-yard field goal in the first quarter. He connected again in the opening minute of the second quarter, this time from 41 yards.

This was the first-ever meeting between the teams, and it included a late-morning kickoff. Wofford hasn’t defeated a team currently in the Atlantic Coast Conference since 1933.
