Drake Maye threw four touchdown passes, including two to Tez Walker, and North Carolina snapped a two-game losing streak by overwhelming visiting Campbell in a 59-7 victory Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Omarion Hampton ran for two touchdowns, racking up 144 rushing yards on 15 carries for North Carolina.

The Tar Heels (7-2) were coming off upset losses to Virginia and Georgia Tech, so sorting out glitches was important in this final nonconference game on their schedule.

Maye completed 16 of 23 passes for 244 yards. Backup quarterback Conner Harrell ran for a 61-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the redshirt freshman’s first career touchdown and later threw a touchdown pass to Chris Culliver.

Campbell (4-5), a Football Championship Subdivision team, committed four turnovers. Quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams threw for one touchdown with one interception, completing of 25 of 37 passes for 185 yards. Williams also gained 51 rushing yards.

Walker, who was hospitalized a week earlier after a hard hit late in a loss to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, had touchdown catches of 10 and 31 yards.

Maye hooked up with John Copenhaver from 25 yards and J.J. Jones from 21 yards and in the third quarter for his other TD throws.

Hampton’s 54-yard run with 8:56 to play in the second quarter broke a 7-7 tie. Hampton went above the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season on that scoring run.

The Camels kept the ball for the next five minutes, but came up empty when Caleb Dowden was wide left on a 33-yard field goal attempt.

Walker’s second touchdown and then Hampton’s 4-yard scoring run with 27 seconds left in the second quarter made it a 28-7 halftime score.

The game’s first points came on Maye’s 10-yard pass to Walker. Campbell matched that with Williams’ 19-yard pass play to Chaney Fitzgerald.

The Tar Heels posted 21 points across the last nine minutes of the first half, using drives of 76, 80 and 49 yards.

Campbell is winless in 11 all-time matchups with Football Bowl Subdivision opponents.
