NCAAF News: Colorado’s shaky QB situation in spotlight vs. Wyoming

Deion Sanders can’t play his son at quarterback these days at Colorado, leading to some confusion atop the depth chart.

Shedeur Sanders’ departure for the NFL has left his father’s offense in the lurch as the Buffaloes (1-2) prepare for a Saturday night nonconference contest against Wyoming (2-1) in Boulder, Colo.

Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter started the season under center in a 27-20 loss at home against Georgia Tech. Salter, true freshman Julian Lewis and Ryan Staub all took snaps during a 31-7 win over FBS newcomer Delaware before Staub got the call last week in a 36-20 loss at Houston in the Big 12 opener.

Staub was 19 of 35 for 204 yards and a touchdown but also tossed two interceptions, leading to speculation that Sanders would return to Salter this week. Sanders said Tuesday that he’s made a decision but wouldn’t reveal it.

Staub is 26 of 45 on the year for 362 yards, three scores and two picks. Meanwhile, Salter is 30 of 44 for 261 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 67 yards and two scores.

While the Buffs look for their answer at quarterback, the Cowboys aim to bounce back from their first loss, a 31-6 setback at home last week against then-No. 20 Utah. Sophomore Kaden Anderson struggled, hitting only 12 of 23 passes for 108 yards with an interception.

Wyoming has scored only 47 points this season, 31 of them in a home win two weeks ago against FCS foe Northern Iowa.

“We have to be better,” said Cowboys coach Jay Sawvel. “We are not where we need to be offensively yet. And we need to get that fixed ASAP.”

Aside from surrendering 28 points in the second half against the Utes, the Cowboys’ defense has been the team’s biggest strength. It permitted just 10 points in the first 10 quarters of the season, including a blanking of Akron.

This will be the first meeting of the programs since 2009, with Colorado holding a 23-3-1 record against Wyoming.
