Ohio State tight end Zak Herbstreit is at home resting following a hospitalization for heart issues, his father announced Thursday.

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” that his son is “in good spirits” but likely facing a 3-to-4 month evaluation process.

“The last five or six days have been kind of a whirlwind,” Kirk Herbstreit said. “He’s been in the hospital with some issues with his heart. We’ve just been trying to keep up with that.”

Zak Herbstreit was admitted to the university’s Wexler Medical Center in Columbus on Tuesday and was under the care of cardiologists.

Zak, who walked on with the Buckeyes in 2021 and played in three games last season, is the third of four sons to Kirk and Allison Herbstreit.

“He’s in good spirits, he’s home with us where his mom can take really good care of him,” Kirk Herbstreit said. “This is just gonna be a long process to kind of see how his heart responds to some of the medications that he’s on. This is a three or four month kinda thing to kinda see how it recovers. But the key is being patient and positive.”

He expressed his gratitude for those who have shown support for his family.

“You can’t even imagine the amount of people that have reached out and are concerned about him,” Kirk Herbstreit said. “So yeah, to everybody that has reached out, we really appreciate that and feel that wholeheartedly.”
