Tennessee promoted Josh Elander on Saturday to replace Tony Vitello as head coach of the baseball team.

Vitello departed the Volunteers on Wednesday to become the manager of the San Francisco Giants.

Elander, 34, initially joined Vitello’s staff as a recruiting coordinator and assistant coach in 2018. He was promoted to assistant head coach after the 2022 season.

“From the outset of this national search, Josh emerged as the undeniable top choice,” athletic director Danny White said. “His relentless commitment has helped transform Tennessee baseball into a powerhouse, and we are proud to have him as our next head coach on Rocky Top. His influence inspires excellence in every aspect of our program and we look forward to continuing our quest for championships on the diamond under Josh’s guidance!”

Elander has worked closely with the team’s hitters and catchers while also serving as the third base coach, helping Tennessee make trips to the College World Series in 2021, 2023 and 2024. The Vols claimed the program’s first national championship in 2024.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity here on Rocky Top,” Elander said. “I’m really happy for our players to continue building on what we’ve already built here. The hunt continues, and we’re still excited. Love this place and these people. So thankful for the best that’s yet to come.”

Elander has also developed a strong reputation for recruiting, bringing in the nation’s No. 1-rated class in both 2024 and 2025.

Elander was a sixth-round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves in the 2012 draft out of TCU. He played four seasons in the Braves’ minor league system and one in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ system, batting .273 with 21 homers and 135 RBIs in 222 games.

Vitello, 47, was hired in San Francisco to replace Bob Melvin. It marked the first time an MLB team hired a manager directly from a collegiate program with no experience in the professional ranks.
