As the midterms in November loom large and are not even two weeks away, Democrat and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is sprinting across the nation to raise money as well as support for Democrats as they hope to hold the House or even get more seats, despite polls indicating that it would be an uphill task.
The dynamic yet blunt House speaker is very different from the fastest man in the world–Usain Bolt with her medium stature and well crafted suits, but has a similar goal to make the fastest dash across the nation, with several stops. She told the New York Times, “I don’t count sheep at night, I count districts.” She added, “I go one, by one, by one.”
Nancy Pelosi has raised $276 million and attended 400 events in this election cycle, visiting more than 20 cities, in October, according to the outlet. She is sprinting ahead but will she reach the finish line is still uncertain as the crime and inflation dodge the nation and dent the popularity of the Democrats. Heavy Republican campaign spending and the traditional drag of midterms on the ruling party might also affect her finish.
The first woman speaker of the House, however, dismissed the drag and said that it didn’t have to be repeated. She said that she looked at the future and not the past and her goal for her party candidates was “Win.”
Pelosi acknowledged the heavy spending of the GOP and said that she could not understand how the Republicans could win. She said, “Part of it is, I cannot believe anybody would vote for these people.” She also described the Republican campaign as one of “endless lying and endless money.”
The Republicans in turn lose no opportunity to disparage her or to compare local candidates to her, in a bid to sway the electorate against these candidates. However, her party members admire her and appreciate her campaign support.
Recent tapes released on the January 6 insurrection show how she assumed a leadership role as well as her concern for then Vice President Mike Pence, as he remained in the Capitol, while a frenzied mob violently attacked the Capitol and chanted slogans against him.
Nancy Pelosi is a beloved figure among her party candidates and is reviled among the opposition. Both the parties: Democrats and Republicans use her as a positive or negative figure in their midterm campaigns. The results of the midterms might reveal how she is perceived by the people, depending on the victories or the losses of the candidates whom she campaigned for.
