The Washington Mystics signed guard Ariel Atkins to a multiyear contract extension on Tuesday.

The team did not announce contract details, but The Washington Post reported it is a two-year extension.

“We are excited that Ariel has committed herself to the long-term future of the Washington Mystics,” general manager Mike Thibault said in a news release. “She has been such an integral part of our success and is entering the prime of her career. Ariel has worked hard to improve every season and the respect she has in our locker room will allow her to take on an even bigger leadership role as we move forward.”

Atkins, 27, is a two-time All-Star. She won the WNBA title with the Mystics in 2019 and a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Atkins has been sidelined with an ankle injury since July 11. In 19 games this season, she is averaging 12.5 points, 2.7 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals.

The Mystics selected Atkins with the No. 7 pick in the 2018 draft. In her six years with Washington, she has averages of 13.3 points, 2.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 169 games (164 starts).

The Mystics have decisions to make about several veterans. Two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne, Tianna Hawkins, Natasha Cloud and Kristi Toliver all are eligible to become free agents after the season.
