Myles Colvin made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 49 seconds to play and Wake Forest went on to fend off Longwood for a 71-68 nonconference victory on Wednesday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Juke Harris finished with 19 points, Nate Calmese had 12 points and Colvin finished with 11 points for Wake Forest (9-3), which made only five of 24 attempts from 3-point range.

Redd Thompson Jr.’s 22 points off the bench led Longwood (6-7) while Elijah Tucker and Johan Nziemi each racked up 13 points. The Lancers were 8-for-31 on 3-point attempts, but Thompson accounted for 6-of-12 shooting from long range.

Colvin, who made seven 3-pointers on Sunday against Queens, went just 1-for-4 on 3-point attempts against Longwood.

After Colvin’s shot snapped a 67-67 tie, Omaha Biliew made a free throw for Wake Forest. Nziemi’s foul shot with 12 seconds left gave Longwood a chance. After Harris missed a pair of free-throw attempts, Thompson’s 3-point launch at the buzzer was off the mark.

The Demon Deacons shot 41% from the floor, but benefited from making 22 of 30 free-throw tries.

Calmese had six early points as Wake Forest took a 15-11 lead, but the lead changed hands seven times in the first half before Longwood claimed a 34-30 lead at the break. Thompson provided eight points and half of the Lancers’ four 3-point baskets.

Wake Forest shot 10-for-30 and was charged with seven turnovers in the first half. The Demon Deacons made four 3-pointers, but they missed their last eight attempts from beyond the arc.

Wake Forest began the second half on a 9-2 run, but Longwood pulled within 46-45. The Demon Deacons finally got a little space on Colvin’s basket for a 53-47 edge.

Longwood went without a field goal for almost six minutes while Wake Forest’s lead grew to 64-54 on a pair of Harris free throws with 3:51 to play.

But Thompson’s long 3-pointer with 3:41 left drew the Lancers within 64-57. Another Thompson 3-pointer tied the game with 1:49 remaining.

Wake Forest went ahead on two Harris free throws before Jacoi Hutchinson’s two foul shots forced the game’s ninth and final tie. That set up Colvin for his big shot.
