About 50 DSPs, including music streaming services Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, and others, have allegedly received audit warnings from the MLC. The MLC issues notices of intent to audit Spotify and other DSPS to verify the accuracy of their royalty payments.
The U.S. Copyright Office designated The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) as a nonprofit organization by the landmark Music Modernization Act of 2018.
Through issuing audit notices to DSPs and the US Copyright Office, The MLC is utilizing a significant authority provided by Congress in the historic Music Modernization Act (MMA). Using this authority, The MLC can audit DSPs using the blanket license to make sure the DSPs have correctly reported and paid royalties.
Kris Ahrend, Chief Executive Officer of The MLC, said, “Ensuring DSPs have reported royalties accurately is one of The MLC’s statutory responsibilities under the MMA.” The MLC has tapped music industry audit veteran Jane Bushmaker, a member of The MLC’s Analytics & Automation team, to oversee DSP audits, which will be conducted by experienced outside audit firms.”
The MLC has distributed over $1.5 billion in royalties and achieved all of the milestones outlined by Congress in the Music Modernization Act.
