Murder in Big Horn Docuseries Examines MMIW and Mystery Surrounding Disappearance of Native American Women

Since the time of European colonization, native communities have been plagued by the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women (or MMIW), and it still exists, particularly among the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Nations of Big Horn County in Montana. Recently, the media has become more involved.

Murder in Big Horn, a three-part documentary series that premieres on Showtime on February 3 and examines four recent cases, places them in the context of the larger epidemic. Big Horn’s murder is a poignant reminder that life should not be taken for granted. The urgent investigation of the epidemic of MMIW afflicting America is the subject of the Showtime documentary series Murder in Big Horn.

A young Native American woman ventures out into the Montana night attends a house party or drinks with friends. She fails to return home. After clarifying jurisdictional issues, law enforcement conducts a search. When the bodies are recovered, “hypothermia” is sometimes given as the official cause of death. Sometimes they are never even discovered.

Murder in Big Horn, a three-part documentary series that premieres on Showtime on February 3 and examines four recent cases, places them in the context of the larger epidemic. The docuseries starts with a culture that early white Americans historically massacred, pillaged, and devalued by effectively trafficking Native women and robbing Native men of their identities as leaders and warriors. It includes rising rates of domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and law enforcement’s apparent lack of concern for Native communities.

The women featured in the docuseries include 19-year-old Shacaiah Harding, who vanished in July 2018 and was never located; 18-year-old Kaysera Stops Pretty Places, who was reported missing in August 2019 and was discovered dead five days later in Montana;14-year-old Henny Scott, who went missing in December 2018 and was discovered dead on the Northern Cheyenne reservation a couple of two weeks later; and 16-year-old Selena Not Afraid, who was missing for almost three weeks. It was determined that the women’s bodies were hypothermic deaths.

There are many conspiracy theories, largely as a result of the long-standing mistrust and tense relations between Native American and white communities. The writers of AMC’s Dark Winds and Oglala Lakota/Diné film MFA candidate Razelle Benally and Matthew Galkin alternate between true crime storytelling, advocacy, and historical context, delving deeply into each individual case and capturing the hopelessness of families seeking answers.

Movies and television have also started to pay attention. Grace Dove, an actress from the Secwépemc tribe, and Hilary Swank, a two-time Oscar winner, play newspaper reporters for an Anchorage paper who collaborate to look into MMIW cold cases in Alaska Daily, an ABC series.
