A mother of six from California recently shared a grocery receipt on social media, and the post went viral. Many web fans responded, though their reactions were mixed. Some commented on her grocery store choice, while others offered cheaper alternatives. A popular outlet said that the mother of six was okay with the tab, while the grocery store did not respond when asked for comments.
Galen Callahan and her husband spent $444.38 when visiting a Trader Joe’s. They posted a video of the grocery bill and added the caption, “Here’s what it takes to feed six kids [for] about a week and a half.” The post got tens of millions of views from web fans.
Some web fans commented on the type of groceries bought, while others gave recommendations of cheaper grocery chains, including Aldi.
The 39-year-old mom from California who lives in the Los Angeles area and works at a title services company with her husband told MarketWatch that they thought it was funny and that they were not slamming Trader Joe’s.
Callahan told the outlet, “Trader Joe’s is a super cheap option where we live. It’s funny to get a receipt that’s the length of the CVS receipt that everybody jokes about. It’s just the number of items we thought funny.”
She added, “A $444 grocery bill that lasts us about 10 days—that’s three meals a day for eight people, that’s $1.85 per meal per person.”
She asked, ” Where will you eat for $1.85?”
The viral receipt brought rising food costs and higher grocery bills to the forefront. Many web fans look for cheaper alternatives and store brands to save money. Food costs have increased the highest post-pandemic.
