Late Saturday, 10 people were killed and 10 others were injured when a lone gunman of Asian origin opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park as the community was celebrating Lunar New Year. The suspect was identified as Huu Can Tran and was said to be driving a white cargo van. When police approached the van, they heard a single gunshot as the 72-year-old man of Asian origin killed himself. California police are investigating the motive of the shooting.
On Monday, officials continued to work on the identification of those who were killed at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. Monterey Park is located about 7 miles away from Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna declined to identify the victims but mentioned that they were in their fifties, sixties and more. He also said that the suspect had carried a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine. A second handgun was discovered in the van, after Tran died of a self-inflicted wound.
The dance studio has been a community hub for the middle aged and elderly. They visit the studio for exercise as well as social interaction. Suspect Huu Tran might have also been a frequent visitor to dance studios, according to reports.

Huu Can Tran had lived in Los Angeles since the nineteen nineties, according to address records. In 2020, Tran moved to a mobile home located in a senior living community in Hemet. He had an active trucking license. Tran was the owner of Tran’s Trucking Company, whose address was a post box in Monterey Park.

On Monday evening, a candlelight vigil has been scheduled at the City Hall in Monterey Park in honor of the victims. The US census data says that about 65 percent of the residents at Monterey Park are Asian and a large majority of them are said to be elderly.
