Late goals from Diego Rubio and Lalas Abubakar rallied the Colorado Rapids from a two-goal deficit to salvage a 2-2 tie with host Real Salt Lake in Sandy, Utah, on Saturday night.
Salt Lake (8-5-6, 30 points) is unbeaten in nine home matches and claimed possession of the Rocky Mountain Cup with the draw. The Utah club has claimed 21 of a possible 27 points at home.
Colorado (5-8-5, 20 points) remains winless in nine road matches after giving up multiple goals for the fourth time in its last five matches. The Rapids have allowed 12 goals in that stretch.
Jefferson Savarino and Justin Meram each scored a goal to break open a tight game and give Salt Lake a 2-0 lead. Savarino has tallied three goals and two assists in six matches since rejoining RSL in May.
Gyasi Zardes came close to putting Colorado on the board on two separate occasions in the first half.
Zardes nearly poked a right footer past RSL keeper Zac MacMath in the 23rd minute after settling a cross. Then, in the 42nd minute, Zardes headed a ball sent into the center of the 6-yard box on a cross from Bryan Acosta off a corner kick. MacMath bobbled the save and Max Alves da Silva sent the ball high and wide of the left post on a toe poke.
Savarino struck in the final minute before halftime. He threaded a right-footer from outside the box inside the right post to put RSL up 1-0.
Meram doubled the lead in the 51st minute. He scored on a snap header after rebounding the ball when Pablo Ruiz blasted a direct free kick into the crossbar.
Rubio pulled a goal back for Colorado after converting a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Rubio got the shot to get the Rapids on the board after Marcelo Silva fouled Michael Barrios in the penalty area.
Abubakar leveled it at 2-2 in the 89th minute. Zardes headed the ball into the center of the box and an unmarked Abubakar blasted a right-footer into the bottom left corner.
