The Vancouver Whitecaps named Jesper Sorensen as the club’s new head coach on Tuesday.

Sorensen, 51, agreed to a two-year contract with the Whitecaps.

He posted a 37-19-17 record in over two years with Brondby IF of the Danish Superliga. He also served as head coach of Denmark’s U-21 squad in 2021 and 2022.

“Jesper is known for his competitiveness, adaptability, and leadership, qualities that have proven to bring the best out of both his players and staff,” Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said.

“Throughout his career, he has delivered immediate success with his teams, whether that was securing promotion or competing for titles. His ability to improve individual players while also implementing a flexible, high-performing tactical system will be key to our continued growth. Jesper is the right leader to take us to the next level.”

The Whitecaps parted ways with then-head coach Vanni Sartini on Nov. 26 after four seasons.

Sartini compiled a 57-51-39 record across all competitions, leading the Whitecaps to the MLS Cup Playoffs three times and winning the past three Canadian Championship titles.

Vancouver finished eighth in the Western Conference last season and defeated the Portland Timbers 5-0 in a wild-card match before losing a Round One, best-of-three series against LAFC.

“I am tremendously excited to join Vancouver Whitecaps FC. It’s a wonderful opportunity and I’m very grateful,” Sorensen said. “I’m here to help the team, win football games, as well as work with the players to get them better and we will do it together.”
