Vancouver Whitecaps defender Florian Jungwirth announced his retirement Friday after 15 professional seasons.

Jungwirth, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Friday, will remain with the club as an assistant coach.

He recorded six goals and 10 assists in 151 MLS matches (140 starts) with the San Jose Earthquakes (2017-21) and Whitecaps (2021-22).

“I have so many great memories with the most beautiful game in the world,” Jungwirth said. “I’m grateful for all the players, coaches and staff members who shared the road with me. Special shout-out to my biggest mentors Ernst Tanner, Horst Hrubesch, Dirk Schuster and Matias Almeyda.

“I’m really grateful that the Vancouver Whitecaps, Axel Schuster and Vanni Sartini, have given me this outstanding chance to work as the assistant coach with the first team. It’s a big form of trust and I can’t wait to pay it back.”

Including his years playing in his native Germany from 2007-17, Jungwirth made more than 400 professional appearances with six clubs.
