The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired Venezuelan striker Sergio Cordova from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg.
The deal announced Monday runs through the 2025 MLS season with a team option for 2026.
To complete the signing of Cordova, 25, to a designated player deal, the Whitecaps sent Real Salt Lake a 2024 first-round draft pick and up to $300,000 in general allocation money.
Cordova registered nine goals and two assists in 33 regular-season matches (27 starts) in his debut MLS season with RSL in 2022. He added two goals in one start in the playoffs.
“Sergio is a player who impressed us during his first year in MLS with Real Salt Lake and arrives in Vancouver as he enters his prime,” Vancouver sporting director Axel Schuster said in a release. “He fits the profile of a striker we want to have amongst our group. He is a proven goal-scorer in our league, brings size and strength, as well as tenacity in the final third. We’re excited to welcome Sergio to Vancouver and our club.”
Augsburg loaned Cordova to RSL for the 2022 MLS season but the two sides were unable to work out a long-term deal.
Cordova scored nine goals in 98 games in the German Bundesliga across his time with Augsburg and Arminia Bielefeld (loan).
