Minnesota United look to remain one of the league’s three undefeated teams when they visit the Chicago Fire on Saturday.
The Loons (3-0-2, 11 points) are coming off a 1-0 win over previously undefeated St. Louis City SC on April 1. The Fire (1-1-3, 6 points) played to a scoreless draw against visiting D.C. United on the same day.
Minnesota United and Los Angeles FC are the lone undefeated teams in the Western Conference, while FC Cincinnati is the only Eastern Conference team that has yet to lose.
The Loons rebounded from their 1-1 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps a week earlier by knocking off host St. Louis when Luis Amarilla converted a penalty kick in the 78th minute.
Dayne St. Clair made three saves for the Loons in his second shutout of the season. Minnesota was outshot 16-10.
“This is not luck,” said Minnesota United coach Adrian Heath, whose team is a perfect 3-0-0 on the road this season. “We’re better than people think.”
Though the Fire played well defensively against D.C. United, their offense never got on track. Chicago had 11 shots but just two on target. Fire goalie Chris Brady made three saves to record first shutout in his fifth career start.
The Fire maintained possession for 57.9 percent of the game, in addition to completing 70 percent of their 394 passes.
But Chicago couldn’t find its late-game magic like it did a week earlier against Inter Miami CF, when Kei Kamara’s goal in the 92nd minute lifted the visiting Fire to a 3-2 win.
“The thing is, we did not lose this game tonight, and it’s not a game where we were leading and then gave up goals,” Chicago coach Ezra Hendrickson said. “So overall, the attitude is better, but we just have to pick up full points at home.
“Minnesota is going to be on a high because they knocked off St. Louis. So it’s gonna be another battle and we just have to be prepared.”
