In a match that can only be described as ugly, St. Louis City’s Tomas Totland scored in second-half stoppage time to forge a 3-3 draw with host Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night.

The teams combined for 36 fouls and five yellow cards.

Joao Klauss had a goal and two assists for St. Louis (2-1-6, 12 points).

Kansas City (2-2-5, 11 points) appeared to grab control in the 77th minute as Erik Thommy put the home side ahead 3-2.

Trailing 2-1 and getting frustrated with the physical play by St. Louis, Kansas City drew even thanks to an own goal by the visitors in the 65th minute.

Johnny Russell had a long free kick and found Daniel Salloi on the back side of the defense. Salloi collected it and then flicked it off the hands of goalkeeper Roman Burki and into the net.

Thommy then put the home side up 3-2 in the 77th minute. Andreu Fontas found Thommy streaking up the left side from deep inside his own zone. Thommy outraced the defense and fired it past Burki.

Kansas City scored first in the 17th minute when Alan Pulido left-footed a shot past Burki. Tim Leibold intercepted a pass around midfield and fed it to Pulido. Pulido found Willy Agada, who fed it right back to Pulido in the box.

St. Louis leveled the match in the 31st minute. Chris Durkin stole the ball from Leibold with a shoulder check. He passed it back to Rasmus Alm, who fed Klauss in the box for Klauss’ third goal of the season and his second in as many matches.

St. Louis then went up 2-1 in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. This time, Klauss’ physical play won the ball back for St. Louis, as he knocked Agada to the ground. He dribbled through the Kansas City defense before passing it to Celio Pompeu, who blasted a shot from outside the box past keeper Tim Melia.
