San Diego FC standout Hirving “Chucky” Lozano will miss Saturday’s match at Real Salt Lake due to a left hamstring injury.
Lozano was injured during the first half of last week’s scoreless tie against St. Louis City. He pulled up after a run down the left sideline and grabbed at the hamstring.
Trainers rushed on to the field to evaluate him and took him to the sideline. He formally was subbed out in the 31st minute in favor of Emmanuel Boateng.
San Diego FC coach Mikey Varas said there isn’t yet a timetable for Lozano’s return.
“It’s not serious,” Varas told reporters. “So that’s good, but it’s impossible to predict exactly how long (he’ll be sidelined), so every week we’ll be evaluating that.”
The 29-year-old Lozano immediately became the face of the new franchise upon his offseason signing due to his performances for the Mexico national team and stellar overseas play. Also, Snapdragon Stadium is just 20 miles from the Mexico border.
Lozano had an assist on San Diego’s first-ever goal when the club stunned the defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 on Feb. 23.
