San Diego FC midfielder Anders Dreyer signed a contract extension on Wednesday through the 2028-29 season.

The deal includes an option through the 2029-30 campaign for the reigning MLS Newcomer of the Year who also was a finalist for the MLS MVP award.

“Extending Anders’ contract was a clear priority for us heading into this season,” SDFC sporting director Tyler Heaps said. “He was able to very quickly show his value to this team through his performances, work ethic, and commitment to the group on and off the field. This extension reflects our confidence in him and our belief that he will continue to play a key role in helping us reach our objectives.”

Dreyer, 27, made an immediate impact in his debut campaign in 2025. He finished the regular season with 19 goals and a league-best 19 assists in 34 matches, with his 38 goal contributions serving as the second-most in the MLS.

The Denmark native added four goals and two assists in five postseason matches for San Diego FC.

Fellow San Diego star Hirving “Chucky” Lozano won’t be part of the team this season or in the future, according to Heaps.

“We have communicated to Hirving and his representatives that he will not be part of the sporting plans moving forward,” Heaps said. “That was not a decision that was taken lightly.”

Lozano had nine goals and 10 assists in 27 regular-season games (22 starts). But the Mexican international missed the regular-season finale and the club’s first-ever playoff match as discipline for a heated locker room altercation during halftime of a match against the Houston Dynamo on Oct. 4. The incident occurred after Lozano was told he was being removed from the match.

Lozano’s contract ran through the 2028 season and included club options for the 2029 and 2030 seasons. He received $6 million in base salary in 2025 and other guarantees that raised his income to $7.633 million, according to the MLS Players Association database.

“We all respect him for the player that he is,” coach Mikey Varas said. “Ultimately, it’s just not the right fit, and when it’s not the right fit, it’s no one’s fault.”
