The New England Revolution added veteran defender Xavier Arreaga in a trade with the Seattle Sounders for a 2025 international roster slot and up to $75,000 in general allocation money.

Arreaga, 29, won an MLS Cup title with the Sounders in 2019 as well as the 2022 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

A native of Ecuador, Arreaga has appeared in more than 100 MLS regular-season games, including 82 starts. Across all competitions, he’s played in more than 220 games.

“We are pleased to welcome Xavier Arreaga to the Revolution to continue his decorated MLS career. Xavier has been a key part of title-winning teams in Seattle, both in our league and at the continental level,” Revolution sporting director Curt Onalfo said. “His arrival adds important reinforcement to our defensive unit for the rest of this season and beyond.”

Revolution head coach Caleb Porter hopes to shore up a defense that is in the middle of the pack with 14 goals allowed. The team is also second worst in the league with a minus-nine goal differential.

“Xavier will bring a calm and composure to our backline with his quality in possession and ability to start our attack,” Porter said. “Defensively, he is a smart player who reads the game extremely well and will complement our other defenders. I really like his track record of winning trophies in Ecuador and in MLS, and his international experience will add leadership and confidence to our locker room.”
