Colorado Rapids midfielder Sam Nicholson underwent surgery on his right ankle, the team announced Friday.
Nicholson’s surgery was to address the anterior and posterior joints in the ankle. He is slated to miss between 12 and 16 weeks.
On Saturday, Nicholson played 45 minutes during a 5-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo. He reportedly has been bothered by the ankle for most of the season.
Nicholson, 28, had one goal and one assist in 22 matches (20 starts) this season.
Nicholson is in his second stint with the Rapids. The Scotland native has played in 85 matches (70 starts) for Colorado since his initial stay began in 2018. He returned in 2022.
Counting a two-year stop with Minnesota United (2017-18), Nicholson has eight goals and 10 assists in 105 MLS matches (84 starts).
