New York City FC forward Alonso Martinez underwent surgery to repair the ruptured ACL in his right knee on Thursday.
“Martinez will begin rehab immediately with the Club medical staff,” NYCFC said in a statement.
Martinez, one of the club’s best players, could miss a large portion of the 2026 season as he recovers.
He sustained the injury while on duty with Costa Rica’s national team in November. Reports at the time indicated Martinez, 27, tore the ACL during a training session.
Martinez led NYCFC with a career-high 17 goals in 30 matches (29 starts) during the regular season and scored two more goals during the first-round playoff victory against Charlotte FC.
Inter Miami thrashed NYCFC 5-1 in the Eastern Conference final on Nov. 29.
