Daniel Salloi scored the tying goal in the 73rd minute as Sporting Kansas City rallied for a 1-1 draw with visiting New York City FC on Saturday night in Kansas City, Kan.

Salloi celebrated his 29th birthday in style, getting to the right spot outside the box and scoring his first goal in eight games, dating back to May 24, to help Kansas City (6-11-6, 24 points) get a point for the fourth time in five games.

After New York goalie Matt Freese made a diving save on Santiago Munoz’s right-footed shot at the edge of the goal line, Salloi was well-positioned for the rebound at the left side of the box. Freese could not maintain possession and the rebound caromed to Salloi, who sent a right-footed shot from near the center of the box into the net for his sixth goal of the season.

Andres Perea scored his first goal of the season in the 22nd minute for NYCFC (10-8-5, 35 points), which was unable to score the tiebreaking goal late in the second half despite numerous opportunities.

NYCFC attempted 17 shots and held possession for 55.3 percent of the contest. Kansas City attempted 11 shots.

Kansas City goalie John Pulskamp made four saves, including a diving stop on Seymour Reid late in the second half. He also made a diving stop on Justin Haak in the 61st minute.

New York’s Matt Freese stopped five shots.

Perea gave NYCFC the lead with a right-footed shot from outside of the box on a transition play after getting a pass from Maxi Moralez and slipping past defender Andrew Brody.

Perea scored about 10 minutes after Pulskamp denied a point-blank chance from Alonso Martinez.

After losing the lead, NYCFC had numerous chances to regain the lead. Perea missed the net in the 87th and Sebastiano Musu missed the net three times in a span of five minutes sabefore Perea’s attempt.
