Minnesota United FC signed midfielder Bongokuhle Hlongwane to a contract extension through 2027 on Saturday.

The deal includes an option for 2028 for the 24-year-old South African, who will no longer occupy a U22 Initiative roster slot.

Hlongwane has tallied 30 goals and 14 assists in 108 appearances since joining MNUFC in January 2022 from South Africa’s Maritzburg United.

“Since his arrival, Bongi has continued to improve his game and has had a positive impact on the team when it came to his success on and off of the field,” chief soccer officer Khaled El-Ahmad said.

“His new contract is a testament to Minnesota and MLS, and our club looks forward to seeing his continued growth and work ethic contribute to the success of our upcoming year and beyond.”

Hlongwane scored a team-high 11 goals last season and ranks second on the club’s career goals chart behind only Robin Lod (32).

“I’m grateful to be a part of this amazing team again; it means a lot to me and my family,” he said. “I can’t wait to continue playing in front of our fans, and I hope for more joy and success.”

Minnesota opens the 2025 MLS regular season at LAFC on Feb. 22.
