Kevin Cabral’s goal in the 85th minute helped the visiting Colorado Rapids earn a 1-1 draw with Austin FC on Saturday in a Western Conference match.
Cabral got loose on a breakaway with Michael Barrios before uncorking a right-footed shot that beat Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver after he was drawn off his line. The goal was just the second all season by the Rapids (0-3-2, 2 points), who have established a dubious team mark for games without a win at the beginning of the season.
Stuver had stopped a season-high seven shots before the goal as Colorado outshot Austin 17-7.
Austin’s Jon Gallagher got the scoring started only five minutes into the match. He was able to stay onside to snare a pass from Sebastian Driussi while inside the box. Moving to his left foot, he beat Colorado keeper William Yarbrough into the center of the goal.
The score was reviewed by VAR and allowed to stand.
Jhojan Valencia was also credited with an assist on Gallagher’s goal.
The Rapids pressed mightily for the equalizer. Jonathan Lewis had chances on back-to-back runs into the box in the 15th minute but had the first blocked at close range with the second, off a corner kick, missing to the right.
In the 40th minute, Keegan Rosenberry’s right-footed shot was stopped at the bottom-right corner by a Stuver dive.
Colorado produced nine shots in the first half to just two for Austin and had three shots on goal to one for the home side. But Austin’s shot resulted in a goal while Stuver saved all three on target for the Rapids.
Austin (2-2-1, 7 points) went on the offensive immediately in the second half with Driussi whistling a shot in the 49th minute after a pass from Ethan Findlay that was saved at the top center of the goal by Yarbrough.
