MLS News: Cory Burke strikes in 89th minute as Red Bulls, Fire draw

Cory Burke’s goal in the 89th minute lifted the visiting New York Red Bulls to a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire on Saturday.

Burke’s header off John Tolkin’s corner kick for his first goal as a Red Bull came after Kei Kamara had given the Fire the lead in the 34th minute with his team-high fourth tally of the season.

The Fire (2-2-5, 11 points) gave up a late goal in their second straight MLS game after conceding the game-winner in a 2-1 loss to the Atlanta United on an own goal in the ninth minute of stoppage time last Sunday.

Chicago, however, appeared to put that setback behind them with a 3-0 win over Midwest Premier League side Chicago House AC in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday.

The Red Bulls (1-3-6, nine points) remain winless in their past six matches (0-2-4) since picking up their lone win of the season on March 18, a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew.

Fire goalie Chris Brady and New York goalie Carlos Coronel each made three saves.

The Red Bulls had possession for 52.3 percent of the game but put just four of their 14 shots on target, in addition to completing 64.9 percent of their 436 passes.

Chicago put half of its eight shots on target, in addition to completing 64.8 percent of its 400 passes.

The Red Bulls failed to convert their best scoring chance when Elias Manoel’s shot hit the crossbar after Manoel received a perfect through pass inside the penalty box from Tom Barlow in the 20th minute.

Chicago didn’t make the same mistake 14 minutes later.

After getting a pass from Maren Haile-Selassie along the right wing, Arnaud Souquet delivered a cross into the box. Kamara timed his run perfectly, enabling him to gain a step on his defender and head the ball into the upper right corner past a diving Coronel.
