MLS News: Chicago’s 1st-minute goal holds up to end Nashville’s unbeaten streak

Philip Zinckernagel scored in the opening minute Saturday night and the Chicago Fire’s vastly-improved defense made that goal stand up over the last 89 minutes for a 1-0 win over visiting Nashville SC.

Chicago (3-2-1, 10 points) won its second straight match and showed off a fine defensive shape, permitting Nashville (4-1-1, 13 points) 10 total shots and four shots on frame. Chris Brady recorded the clean sheet in net, the team’s third of the year after allowing 60 goals in 2025, tied for third-most in the East.

The Fire played with a lead almost immediately. Taking advantage of a bad turnover in the Nashville end, Jonathan Bamba had a chance to shoot but instead crossed to the right side. Zinckernagel merely had to tap it in past helpless goalie Brian Schwake 15 seconds into the match.

Chicago leaned on Brady heavily down the stretch, and he delivered a pair of critical saves in the final 10 minutes. He stopped Jeissen Palacios’ header in the 90th minute.

He then denied a Warren Madrigal header in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Nashville pressured heavily during eight minutes of stoppage time but couldn’t log the equalizer and lost for the first time in 10 matches across all competitions this year.

Nashville owned a significant possession advantage for the fixture – 58.3% to 41.7 – but really didn’t do much with that edge until the end. The Fire counter-attacked well enough, beginning with Zinckernagel’s goal and continuing throughout the first half.

Chicago also aided Brady with its ability to get the ball out of danger, finishing the fixture with 16 clearances. It was able to keep Nashville’s attacking trio of Sam Surridge, Hany Mukhtar and Cristian Espinoza under wraps, allowing just one shot on target each by Surridge and Muhktar.

Bamba was instrumental in the Fire’s effort, adding three shots to his assist. Zinckernagel added four shots, two on frame. No one else put a shot on goal for Chicago.
