MLS News: Alonso Martinez, NYCFC keep New England frustrated

Alonso Martinez scored the tiebreaking goal in the 68th minute and New York City FC held on for a 2-1 home victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium.

With the match knotted 1-1, New York City methodically worked the ball in the box when Keaton Parks sent a drive toward the net that New England goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic saved. But the rebound went right to Martinez, who took to the air for a splendid right-footer that rippled the net.

It continued a stellar start for Martinez, who has three goals on the young campaign. Julian Fernandez tied the match just before the 40-minute mark for NYCFC (2-1-1, 7 points), who have won two in a row.

Meanwhile, it was another frustrating result for New England (0-3-1, 1 point). While the Revolution finally managed to score in 2025, it came through a New York City own goal. They recorded just two shots on goal despite holding 54.1 percent of the possession. Though the Revolution were highly competitive and played solid defense on the night, they’ve now gone winless in their first four matches of the season for a second consecutive campaign.

New York City had the match’s first true scoring chance in the ninth minute. However, Ivacic was quick to stop Parks’ header off a corner.

The Revolution earned a massive break to open the scoring. In the 26th minute, New England’s Brandon Bye curled the ball into the box, where it darted off the foot of NYCFC’s Thiago Martins and past unsuspecting keeper Matt Freese for the own goal.

New York City answered in the 38th minute. After the Revs initially thought they would benefit from a handball on Jackson Yueill’s shot, the NYCFC broke the other way through Hannes Wolf, who sent it ahead for a streaking Fernandez to blaze by Ivacic for the equalizer.

Clinging to that one-goal lead, NYCFC clamped down and successfully defended four Revs corners in the final four minutes of stoppage time.
