As expected, the New York Yankees placed infielder/outfielder Matt Carpenter on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

Carpenter fractured his foot Monday night in a win over the Seattle Mariners when he drove a foul ball toward the ground in the top of the first inning.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Carpenter, who was New York’s designated hitter, eventually was replaced by pinch hitter Tim Locastro in the third inning.

After the game, the 36-year-old told reporters he plans to return as soon as possible.

“It’s obviously not ideal. I’m pretty disappointed,” Carpenter said. “But my mindset is that this won’t be the end for me here this year. I’m hopeful that I can come back and contribute. Don’t have a timeline yet, but I’m hopeful for the best.”

So is manager Aaron Boone.

“He’s become such an important factor in that room, everyone loves him and he’s been incredibly productive. It’s a blow,” Boone said. “Hopefully we’ll get him back at some point.”

After 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, including the past two batting sub-.200, Carpenter has seen a revival of his career with the Yankees. He is hitting .305 with 15 home runs and 37 RBIs in 47 games this season.

Carpenter signed as a free agent in March with the Texas Rangers, who released him on May 19. The Yankees signed him a week later.

In 14 games this season with the Yankees, Andujar is batting .245 (12-for-49) with no home runs and four RBIs.
