MLB White Sox SS Tim Anderson (finger) hits IL, could miss 4-6 weeks

The Chicago White Sox placed star shortstop Tim Anderson on the 10-day injured list Tuesday afternoon due to a torn ligament in his left middle finger.

Anderson was serving the back half of a two-game suspension in Chicago’s 4-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, the first game of a doubleheader. The White Sox made the announcement between games and reinstated right-handed pitcher Reynaldo Lopez from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Bally Sports reported earlier in the day that Anderson was expected to miss 4-6 weeks after he injured his hand on a swing Saturday against the Texas Rangers. White Sox manager Tony La Russa confirmed the injury happened on a checked swing in his final at-bat of that game.

The official diagnosis was a sagittal band tear on the middle finger of Anderson’s left hand.

Anderson, 29, is batting .301 with six home runs and 25 RBIs in 79 games this season. He was named an All-Star for the second time.

In seven seasons in Chicago, Anderson is batting .288 with a .759 OPS and has 97 home runs with 313 RBIs in 772 games.

Anderson served a two-game suspension for bumping an umpire last month. If Anderson misses six weeks with the injury, he would return with just two weeks remaining in the regular season with the White Sox in a tight race for a playoff spot.

Lopez, 28, had not played since July 23 due to a low back strain. He is 4-2 with a career-low 2.98 ERA this season across 36 relief appearances and one start.
