The Boston Red Sox placed first baseman Eric Hosmer on the 10-day injured list and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day IL on Tuesday.

Hosmer is plagued by lower back inflammation. The transaction is retroactive to Aug. 21.

Eovaldi is bothered by right shoulder inflammation. His move was backdated to Aug. 19.

Outfielder Franchy Cordero and right-hander Josh Winckowski were recalled from Triple-A Worcester. Winckowski will start Tuesday night’s home game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hosmer departed Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles with back soreness and sat out Sunday. He is batting .225 (9-for-40) with four RBIs in 12 games since being acquired from the San Diego Padres earlier this month.

Hosmer, 32, batted .272 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 90 games with San Diego this season. He has a .277 career with 196 homers and 879 RBIs in 1,656 career games with the Kansas City Royals (2011-17), Padres (2018-22) and Red Sox.

Eovaldi was scratched from an Aug. 18 start against the Pittsburgh Pirates and has been unable to shake the irritation in the shoulder area. He last pitched on Aug. 12 when he went six innings against the New York Yankees.

Eovaldi, 32, is 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 18 starts this season. Overall, he is 66-68 with a 4.18 ERA in 238 appearances (219 starts) over 11 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-12), Miami Marlins (2012-14), New York Yankees (2015-16), Tampa Bay Rays (2018) and Red Sox.

Cordero, 27, was to be sent back to Worcester on Tuesday after being Boston’s 27th man for Sunday’s Little League Classic. He homered in that game, his fifth of the season, to go with 25 RBIs and a .222 batting average in 73 games.

Winckowski, 24, is 5-6 with a 5.19 ERA in 12 starts for Boston this season.
