MLB Rays come alive with seven-run ninth inning to top Tigers

Randy Arozarena had a two-run double during a seven-run ninth inning and six Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a shutout as the Rays topped the host Detroit Tigers 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Brandon Lowe supplied a two-run single and Isaac Paredes and Luke Raley contributed two hits apiece. Tampa Bay went 3-1 in the four-game series.

Rays starter Drew Rasmussen was pulled after tossing three innings without a hit or a walk. Colin Poche (4-1) struck out two batters in one inning of relief and picked up the victory.

Detroit starter Matt Manning tossed seven scoreless innings. He gave up four hits and walked three while striking out seven, tying a career best.

Tigers’ batters only managed three hits and didn’t draw a walk.

Neither team had a hit in the first three innings. The Rays threatened to score in the fourth with two-out singles from Paredes and Raley. Manning then induced a popup from Francisco Mejia.

The Tigers came even closer to pushing across runs in the bottom of the inning against Jalen Beeks. Riley Greene led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. He tried to score on Javier Baez’s grounder but was thrown out at the plate. Harold Castro then ripped a deep shot to left, but Arozarena leapt at the fence and robbed him of a two-run home run.

Detroit’s Kody Clemens had a bloop double in the fifth against Brooks Raley but was left stranded. Each side had a baserunner in the seventh, but the deadlock still couldn’t be broken.

That all changed when Gregory Soto (2-6) took the mound in the ninth. Paredes had a one-out single and Mejia smacked a two-out double. Soto then walked Jose Siri and Yu Chang on 3-2 counts to force in a run. Another walk, this time to Yandy Diaz, made it 2-0.

Lowe then slapped a single up the middle off Jason Foley to double the advantage. Arozarena followed with his double down the right-field line.

Roman Quinn knocked in Arozarena with a single to complete the outburst.
