Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper suffered a fractured thumb and is out indefinitely after taking a 97-mph fastball off his left hand from San Diego starter Blake Snell during Saturday night’s game.

“Things happen for a reason, everybody says that. This reason sucks right now,” Harper said after the game, a 4-2 Phillies’ win. “But at the same time, it is what it is. I gotta be positive for the guys. I’m just really bummed for the organization, the guys and, you know, the city of Philadelphia fans as well. I love running out there playing every day.”

Harper was able to get his face out of the way of the up-and-in fastball from Snell, but the pitch caught him on his left hand, which was still wrapped around his bat.

The Phillies announced the injury later in the game.

The reigning National League MVP immediately dropped to his knees in obvious pain. Shortly thereafter, he yelled at Snell as he exited the field though it appeared he was accepting an apology from the southpaw.

Harper, who has battled an elbow ligament injury all season, came into Saturday’s contest batting .320/.385/.602 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs.

Johan Camargo came on to replace Harper for the Phillies.
